The supply of electricity and electrical geysers to the communities in South Africa has become a subject of serious controversy. With the shortage of electricity and the enormous rise in tariffs, the prospects of our communities ever gaining access to hot water has diminished.  This is a very serious social matter which few people seem to be concerned about.

Paraffin geyser

CBS has designed and patented a tankless non-electrical geyser operated with paraffin, which offers a complete and cost-effective solution to supplying hot water to communities in the townships.

Contrary to standard types of geysers with hot water storage tanks, CBS’s geyser is an instant water heater which heats up water from cold to 45 /50°C within less than 60 seconds from the time it is switched on. It provides a continuous flow of hot water for as long as is required. If no more hot water is required, the geyser is switched off which makes it extremely energy efficient and economical to use.

1 Liter of paraffin produces more than 200 liters of hot water. A family of 4 can easily provide themselves with hot water at a cost of no more than R60 per month. Because electrical rates is becoming unaffordable, some people who have electrical geysers are starting to switch to paraffin geysers saving themmoney which can be better used.

Real People Bank has already agreed to provide loans, subject to their credit requirements. Alternatively CBS offers interest free lay-buy terms over 6 months to assist people in purchasing the geyser.

CBS is empowering people inside communities countrywide by appointing them as agents to assist with marketing. Commission of R200/unit is paid to agents for each geyser sold, which creates a significant income for many.

Currently CBS is negotiating to supply paraffin geysers for two housing projects, one of 20,000 units in KZN and one of 18,000 units in Gauteng.

Installation is very easy and does not require skilled labour. CBS appoints plumbers from inside the communities to do installations, which also creates work opportunities and revenue for them.

There is an absolute need for a hot water solution in the communities as is reflected by the response of people when live demonstrations are done. The reaction of especially children has to be seen to be appreciated.

The geyser has been certified safe by the Emfuleni Fire Department, and is in the process of being submitted for approval to the South African Bureau of Standards.
